Unilateral renal agenesis

Clinical:

  • A 27 years old lady
  • No medical illness
  • Noted absent of right kidney on ultrasound

Imaging findings:

  • Intravenous urography perfomed.
  • Normal opacification and demonstration of left renal and ureter (yellow arrows).
  • No duplex system. Normal course of left ureter. No hydronephrosis.
  • Urinary bladder is also normal.
  • Absent of right kidney and ureter.

Diagnosis: Unilateral renal agenesis.

Discussion:

  • Renal agenesis refers to a congenital abscence of one or both kidneys.
  • Unilateral renal agenesis occurs about 1 in 500 live births.
  • In isolated renal agenesis patients are asymptomatic and found incidetally when abdomen is imaged for other reason.
  • It may also be associated with other associated congenital anomalies especially those involving the genitourinary system.
  • In unilateral renal agenesis, imaging shows absent one kidney, absent ipsilateral renal artery and compensatory hypertrophy of contralateral kidney. Careful examination of the rest of abdomen is necessary to rule out ectopic kidney or crossed fused renal ectopia.
